Spiritual growth can help people understand themselves better, find peace and deal with difficult situations. But sometimes, we use spiritual ideas to avoid things that make us uncomfortable. You may call it protecting your peace when you are avoiding a difficult conversation. Or you may say you have moved on when you are still hurt but don’t want to face those feelings.
Because you don’t want to deal with the discomfort, the problem may remain unresolved, if someone has hurt you and you refuse to discuss it. Here are five things worth thinking about if you are trying to understand the difference between spiritual growth and avoidance. Images: Canva (for representative purposes only) You don’t have to argue with everyone or explain yourself to people who refuse to understand you. But avoiding every uncomfortable conversation is not always the same as protecting your peace. Sometimes, growth means learning to have an honest conversation instead of walking away from every difficult situation. You may tell yourself that you no longer care about someone or that you have completely moved on. But if you are still thinking about what happened or hoping they will realise their mistake, you may not have processed those feelings yet. Healthy detachment does not mean pretending you feel nothing. It means accepting your feelings without allowing them to control every decision you make.

You may keep asking the universe for a sign about a relationship, a job or an important decision. Spiritual beliefs can help you reflect on what you want. But constantly waiting for a sign can become a way of putting off a decision you already need to make. Think about what is actually happening, consider your options and decide what you can do next. You can have faith while still taking responsibility for your choices. Forgiveness is important to many people’s spiritual beliefs. It can help them move forward instead of holding on to anger. But you don’t have to rush the process just to prove that you have grown spiritually. If someone has hurt you, you are allowed to acknowledge that pain. You can forgive someone without getting back together with them, trusting them again or allowing them into your life. You watch videos about manifestation, read books about healing and save quotes about self-love. You may even feel inspired after listening to someone talk about boundaries. But are those lessons changing your everyday behaviour? For example, if you keep saying you deserve respect but continue accepting the same hurtful behaviour, it may be time to put those ideas into practice.
