Titled Two Worlds Woven into One : A Portrait of the United Kingdom , the photography exhibition was held in Kolkata on September 10, followed by an artist talk on September 11. From bustling urban spaces to quieter rural landscapes, photographer Sonal Jindal’s latest collection brought together contrasting glimpses of Britain through people, places and everyday moments.
The exhibition explored the connections between urban and rural Britain, capturing landscapes, communities and fleeting moments from everyday life. Rather than presenting a single image of the country, the collection brought together different visual perspectives that reflected the diversity of contemporary British life. Visitors also got an opportunity to browse the British Council Library’s photography collection, featuring books and resources on photography, visual storytelling, culture and contemporary Britain. During the artist talk, Jindal spoke about her creative process and the ideas behind the collection. Drawing inspiration from literature, poetry and cinema, she approached photography as a form of storytelling, with street photography and fleeting moments of human connection forming a key part of her practice. The exhibition and artist talk were part of the Culture Fridays series and the UK’s National Year of Reading. The two-day programme was held at the British Council’s Kolkata premises, bringing audiences closer to contemporary British culture through photography and storytelling.
