There’s no denying the kids almost every part of the world love foods that are packed with taste, fried or junk! But you will be amazed to know that a recent report by three-quarters of state secondary schools in England left parents worried and shocked after learning that the school lunch menu across the country is heavily leaning on fried items and processed meats, while high-fat snacks are being sold to pupils as early as breakfast time.
The findings come from a new analysis of 391 state secondary schools conducted by Bite Back, a food charity founded by chef Jamie Oliver. Out of all the menus examined, 75% contained at least one direct violation of official school food standards, primarily caused by canteens serving unhealthy foods much more frequently than permitted. D’Arcy Williams, chief executive of Bite Back, called the system a fundamental failure, warning that schools should be a sanctuary for health rather than an environment pushing junk food. Katharine Jenner from the Obesity Health Alliance echoed these concerns, adding that if we cannot protect the food environment within schools where children spend most of their days, it signals a deeper issue across the broader food system. Acknowledging the widespread noncompliance, the Department for Education stated that a major overhaul of school food rules is underway. Alongside an expansion of free school meals for families receiving Universal Credit, ministers plan to introduce a tougher enforcement regime and require all schools to publish their menus and food policies online to ensure full transparency.
