Disney and Japanese video game company Square Enix previewed Kingdom Hearts 4 at a Disney fan convention in Anaheim, celebrating the franchise’s upcoming 25th anniversary, according to a report by Reuters. The association has managed to gross more than $1 billion at retail for Disney, as per the EVP Sean Shoptaw. For those unaware, the action role-playing series consists a blend of Disney films with Square Enix’s Final Fantasy universe.
Release timeline and adaptation
The game follows protagonist Sora after the events of Kingdom Hearts 3, as he becomes trapped in Quadratum, a fictional version of Tokyo’s Shibuya district. Kingdom Hearts 4 is scheduled to debut in 2027, continuing a collaboration that began with the first game in 2002. The four-minute trailer unveiled at the fan convection in Anaheim revealed a new world which is based on Pixar’s animation movie Coco which an expansion of an earlier footage. Apart from this, Disney also announced that the franchise will be adapted into an original anime series for Disney Channel and Disney+, with Nomura heavily involved in development.
The report by Reuters reveals that the creator Tetsuya Nomura said that themes of the film offer a strong gameplay synergies. Along with this, the fans also witnessed the debut of a Paper Mickey Mouse world. In this new world , Mickey mouse becomes a playable character in a setting of storybook, introducing puzzle‑based mechanics and transformations. The preview reunited audiences with Donald, Goofy, King Mickey, and Hades, while teasing a significant role for Maleficent. The Anaheim showcase underscored how Kingdom Hearts remains one of Disney’s most successful gaming ventures, blending nostalgia, innovation, and cross‑media storytelling for a global fanbase.
