GTA 6 will make players pay closer attention to Lucia and Jason’s fitness and sleep, with Rockstar adding systems that can affect their health, stamina and other attributes. Details from a preview show that working out will be more involved than in earlier Grand Theft Auto titles, while an in-game sleep tracker will indicate whether the characters are properly rested. The details emerged after the GTA 6 Extended Look, with additional information coming from a preview session and a YouTube video by TGG, as reported by GamesRadar+. Rob Nelson, co-head of development for GTA 6, also demonstrated how exercise and sleep can influence the two protagonists during gameplay. Working out is returning to the Grand Theft Auto series in GTA 6, but the system appears to have more layers than in previous games. GTA 6 will also track Lucia and Jason’s sleep through an in-game fitness app on their phones. The sleep tracker will show whether the characters are well rested.

If they don’t get enough rest, their condition can affect the regeneration, or “regens,” of certain attributes. Nelson explained the system during the preview: “We track lots of things, all this good stuff.” Players can visit multiple gyms across the city and use them to improve different aspects of the characters’ physical condition. During a preview playthrough, Nelson noticed that some of the characters’ bars were running low and suggested that improving stamina would be important. Exercise will be one way to address this, with different activities affecting different attributes. Players can also work out with Lucia and Jason together. The activity can serve as more than just a way to improve their fitness, as Nelson explained that exercising together can also function as a date. The preview showed Lucia and Jason entering a gym, purchasing a membership and starting a workout session. Lucia also bought a protein shake to support her workout. Nelson explained that players must complete three exercises during a session to finish that day’s workout. Completing the workout helps increase the characters’ health. Stamina can also improve through other forms of cardio, and working out more generally can contribute to overall health. This means players will have different ways to maintain the physical condition of the two protagonists rather than relying on a single activity. Fitness will not be the only part of the characters’ condition that players need to monitor.

Players will need to keep track of both exercise and rest as they manage the characters throughout the game. The combination of exercise, stamina, health and sleep tracking gives GTA 6’s character systems a more detailed role in everyday gameplay. The sleep system therefore works alongside the fitness mechanics rather than operating as an entirely separate feature. The exact extent of these effects is not yet clear, but Nelson’s demonstration confirms that the characters’ physical condition will be tracked and can influence their attributes. The system also gives players different ways to improve Lucia and Jason. Cardio activities can help stamina, gym workouts can improve health, and getting enough sleep can help ensure that certain attributes regenerate properly. As Rockstar continues to reveal details through previews and gameplay footage, the fitness and sleep systems are among the features that will shape how players manage the two protagonists outside missions.
