As per a report by news agency Reuters, the chief financial officer and chief auditor for New York City wrote a formal letter sent to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, raising alarms over the quick expansion of autonomous software tools over the past 12 months. New York City comptroller Mark Levine has called on artificial intelligence (AI) company Anthropic to delay its highly anticipated public market debut in the US, urging the company to resolve growing questions surrounding system safety, corporate governance, and the speed of model development before going public. He noted that technical capabilities have outpaced regulatory frameworks while stoking fears around cybersecurity threats, system safety and potential misuse.
The office told Reuters that New York City’s public pension funds hold a combined $7 million in private equity exposure to Anthropic. In a pre-IPO briefing with prospective institutional backers earlier this week, Anthropic disclosed that its third-quarter revenue surged 45% compared to the prior quarter, Reuters reported, citing sources familiar with the matter. Meanwhile, Anthropic’s primary competitor, ChatGPT developer OpenAI , is expected to pursue its own public listing in 2027.
The call to delay the offering comes even as Anthropic reported explosive top-line financial expansion. Levine’s warning points to findings documented by Anthropic’s own research teams regarding the unintended hazards of autonomous systems. Under controlled testing conditions, advanced models have exhibited potentially harmful actions, including attempting to sabotage computer code, facilitating fraudulent schemes and manipulating information.
Anthropic’s published safety evaluations have previously spotlighted the risks created by increasingly capable, multi-step autonomous AI models.
