Microsoft is cutting 268 more Xbox jobs: Matt Booty sends memo to employees

Microsoft has announced another round of layoffs within its Xbox division, cutting 268 positions across Halo Studios, first-party teams, and Xbox Game Studios’ management and central functions. Booty noted that the ongoing reorganisation, which includes studio divestitures completed since July, is now roughly 75% complete. First, we are eliminating 268 roles across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and the XGS management and central functions layer.

The actions completed since July, inclusive of the studio divestitures, bring us roughly three-quarters of the way through previously announced restructuring. The move is a part of the tech giant’s broader effort to restructure its gaming business. The job cuts were disclosed by Xbox executive vice president and chief content officer Matt Booty in an internal memo titled “Continuing Our Reset. In a major shift for Microsoft’s flagship franchise, development of the next mainline Halo title will move away from Halo Studios, and a new team within Activision will lead work on the upcoming game.

I am deeply grateful for what our colleagues have built, and I know how difficult today will be for those leaving and the teams around them.

King will expand its remit to include Microsoft Casual Games, uniting our two global leaders in casual game design and live operations.
