Moscow under drone swarm: Ukraine launches massive overnight attack

Ukraine launched an overnight drone attack involving around 650 drones targeting the Moscow region, Russian authorities said on Tuesday, in one of the largest such attacks on the Russian capital and its surroundings in the past two years. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said 105 drones were downed near the city. Regional Governor Andrei Vorobyov said a 20-year-old man was killed in a village on the outskirts of Moscow and several homes were damaged.

RIA Novosti reported that six people were wounded.

“More than 51 per cent of Russia’s oil refining capacity is out of action”, the ministry said on X. The ministry said recent attacks had targeted refineries and processing facilities in Moscow, Yaroslavl, KINEF (Kirishi), Ust-Luga, Perm, Ilsky, Saratov and Syzran, among other locations. Ukraine’s Defence Minister Evgeniy Khmara said the partial disruption was the result of “carefully planned and systematic work” to destroy Moscow’s military-economic potential. Russia has said it plans to step up strikes on infrastructure targets, including in Kyiv, as winter approaches.

Ukraine has been targeting Russia’s energy infrastructure in an effort to curb Moscow’s revenue that funds its war efforts. This comes as Ukraine’s Defence Ministry on Monday claimed that more than half of Russia’s oil refining capacity had been put out of action by its armed forces.
