Trump Administration to Announce Gaza Recovery Plan
The Board of Peace, established by former US President Donald Trump, is set to announce a six-month recovery plan for Gaza on Wednesday. This plan, valued at $2.45 billion, will focus on 66 projects aimed at rebuilding infrastructure, restoring essential services, reviving the economy, and establishing governance in the post-war context.
The Board of Peace hopes the recovery process can begin after Israel’s October 27 election and the formation of a new government.
“The plan shows how to stand up a government from nothing, an economy from shambles and a territory from disaster,” a Board of Peace official said. The plan, prepared over the past year by officials from the Board of Peace and the Palestinian technocratic government, includes funding for temporary housing, rubble removal, hospital repairs, economic recovery and the deployment of a multinational security force. But its implementation will depend on cooperation from Israel and Hamas. Israel has agreed in principle to some elements of the proposal but has refused to begin implementing it, while Hamas has agreed in principle to disarm but the process has yet to be tested. However, the election could result in political deadlock, potentially further delaying the proposal.
Gaza Reconstruction Costs Estimated at $71.4 Billion
A recent proposal has assessed the physical damage in Gaza at $35.2 billion. It projects that full recovery and reconstruction will necessitate approximately $71.4 billion over the next decade. Currently, the parties involved have not yet secured the full $2.45 billion needed for a six-month recovery program. However, Board of Peace officials have indicated that the entire amount will not be required immediately.
