Dubai: Iran said it will announce a new restricted zone in the Gulf in the coming days, along with maps of a new shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz, as a weekend exchange of strikes on shipping sent oil prices higher on Monday. The new restricted zone will begin from where the US blockade of Iran begins and extend into areas of the Gulf, Mohsen Rezaei, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said on Sunday in an interview with state TV.
Iran govt to raise fuel price for heavy users: Iran will raise the price of gasoline for users surpassing 110 litres per month starting Tuesday, a govt spokesperson said Sunday. The price of the first and second quotas, which include 110 litres, will remain unchanged, but the price of the third quota will be raised to 100,000 Iranian rials per litre (around 4 US cents based on the free-market rate), Fatemeh Mohajerani said in comments carried by state media. Iran experienced widespread protests in 2019 over the same issue. The higher fuel price will only affect consumers who require more than 110 litres per month, Mohajerani said.
“We will only commit to the Strait of Hormuz being open when they (the Americans) stop the sabotage, threats and attacks on Iran,” Rezaei added. The increase in Iran’s gasoline price, which is one of the lowest in the world, was discussed by the govt and postponed amid concerns it could trigger new protests.
