The 90-metre hydraulic ladder that has been added to NMC fire brigade fleet
The move comes as the civic body begins approving building projects up to 90 metres in height, reflecting the city’s rapid vertical expansion. Manufactured by Finland-based Bronto Skylift and mounted on a Volvo chassis, the platform is designed according to international EN-1777 standards. It can reach heights of up to 90 metres, enabling firefighting and rescue operations in buildings of nearly 30 storeys. The equipment also offers a horizontal outreach of 30 metres and can extend 10 metres below ground level for complex rescue situations. Fire department officials said the rescue cage could carry up to 500kg, while the ladder’s 360-degree rotation allows firefighters to access multiple sides of a structure without repositioning the vehicle. NMC officials said high-rise construction accelerated after the introduction of the unified Development Control and Promotion Regulations (DCPR) in 2020, with more than 100 projects between 50 and 60 metres and nearly 30 projects between 70 and 90 metres developed across the city.
“The platform is equipped with a water monitor capable of discharging 3,800 litres per minute and features integrated water delivery systems across all three booms,” an official said. The officials said the vehicle would significantly improve response to emergencies in high-rise apartments, commercial complexes and other tall structures. “Additional safety features include a talk-back communication system, emergency lighting, sirens, warning lights and a backup diesel generator,” the official said.
The hydraulic platform, inaugurated by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis during his recent visit to the city, is the tallest firefighting ladder in NMC’s inventory.
