NCP Leader Pushes for Nashik Inclusion in DMIC Phase Two
Chhagan Bhujbal, a cabinet minister and leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), has formally requested that Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal consider adding Nashik district to the second phase of the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC). This initiative aims to enhance industrial growth and infrastructure development in the region.
Bhujbal pointed out that Nashik was considered for inclusion when the first phase of the DMIC was planned in 2013-14 but was eventually left out due to concerns over the availability and reservation of water for industrial use.
He said the situation has changed significantly over the past decade, with improvements in infrastructure and connectivity making the district a strong contender for the second phase. He urged the Union government to accord priority to the proposal and initiate Nashik’s inclusion process in the project.
Additionally, it has proximity to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and Dighi Port, which further strengthens its case for industrial expansion, he said. Emphasising over the diversified industrial base in the district, he highlighted the range of firms, including automobiles, electrical, pharmaceuticals, wineries, agro-processing, among others, he said, adding that the inclusion in the DMIC would also provide these sectors with world-class infrastructure, improved logistics and better access to domestic and international markets. He said integration with the DMIC would boost farmers’ income through value addition and processing.
The minister noted that Nashik’s connectivity – the Mumbai-Agra National Highway, Samruddhi Mahamarg, railway and air networks, and expected benefits from the proposed Surat-Chennai Economic Corridor – would be an advantage. The NCP leader also highlighted the district’s strong potential in agro-processing, cold-storage chains, logistics, and export-oriented industries. The minister has sought a comprehensive feasibility study and infrastructure survey for Nashik’s inclusion in the second phase. He requested the Centre to identify suitable land parcels and industrial zones, prepare a long-term water management plan and hold consultations with industrial associations, public representatives and state govt before finalising the proposal.
