NMC is creating multi-utility ducts for various utility services underground so that digging of roads in future is avoided
The civic body aims to complete all associated infrastructure and road works by March 2027. Khatri said that the Kumbh Mela Authority has approved a total of 29 road projects worth Rs 1,200 crore for the city. Work orders have already been issued for 19 roads, and the process for awarding work orders for the remaining 10 roads is underway. Instructions have also been issued to begin work on the 19 roads by the end of March, with all road projects targeted for completion by March 2027. Construction on the remaining 10 roads will begin after the issuance of work orders. The 19 priority roads selected for the first phase include Gangapur Road from Bardan Phata to Sula Chowk at a cost of Rs 56.86 crore; Trimbak Road from Papaya Nursery to XLO Junction at Rs 77.33 crore; XLO Junction to Garware Chowk at Rs 71.99 crore; Vihitgaon to Godavari Ghat via Bytco Chowk and Jail Road at Rs 65.50 crore; and Nandur Naka Bridge to Jatra Hotel at Rs 71.20 crore.
Khatri further said that officials and contractors have been given a February end deadline to complete utility‑duct construction. These underground ducts will carry seven essential services, including water supply, drainage lines, optical fibre cables (OFC), piped natural gas for Maharashtra Natural Gas Ltd (MNGL), electricity cables for Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL), and stormwater lines. The integrated duct system aims to streamline future repairs, reduce disruptions, and increase the life span of newly constructed roads. NMC Commissioner Manisha Khatri has instructed officials and contractors concerned to speed up utility‑duct construction so road‑development work can begin without delay. She added that work on utility ducts for seven major services is already in progress to eliminate the need for digging up the newly built road surfaces in the future. Creating underground ducts below the carriageways will prevent road damage and ensure smoother long‑term maintenance. Most of these major stretches will be developed using durable white‑topping technology to improve road quality and longevity. end
