Tomin J Thachankary
Kottayam : Tomin J Thachankary, a 1987-batch IPS officer, failed to give an explanation about the excess income he generated during the period between Jan 1, 2003, to July 4, 2007. When his legal income was around Rs 46 lakh during this period, his expenditure was around Rs 1.02 crore.
He had to give an explanation for the additional income of around Rs 66 lakh. Around 18 land deeds were executed by him during that time. Around 15 were made by him and three jointly with his close relatives. The amount shown in these deeds, which was around Rs 33 lakh, was much below the market value. He also transferred an amount of Rs 45 lakh into his wife’s account and contended that it was given as a gift. Around Rs 52 lakh had landed in his account as cash and Rs 45 lakh was transferred to his wife’s account as a gift, he contended.

Initially it was said that it was his wife who bought the land and since she had issues with Land Ceiling Act, the properties were purchased in his name. The properties were those adjacent to his studio in Thammanam, according to the prosecution. But when he declared his IT returns, it was not shown as a gift. Meanwhile, an MP from Keralam had written to the Centre to consider Thachankary’s objection to prosecution sanction. The Centre forwarded this to central vigilance commission , which in fact sanctioned prosecution against him. Download the TOI App.
Meanwhile, a month before the case was registered, Thachankary moved the property in the name of his wife.
