Madurai : V O Chidambaranar Port handled 2,188 wind turbine blades between April and August 2026, up 74.5% from 1,254 in the corresponding period of FY 2025-26. The number of vessels carrying wind turbine blade consignments also increased from 39 to 52, indicating a rise in the movement of large clean-energy components through the port. Wind turbine blade handling has grown steadily, from 2,030 blades in FY 2023-24 to 2,635 in FY 2024-25 and a record 4,922 in FY 2025-26, an 86.8% increase over the previous financial year. The port has 1,00,000 square metres of open storage space outside the Customs-notified area and 1,44,000 square metres within it for wind turbine blades and associated components. Berths 5, 6 and 7 offer a combined paved area of about 1,00,000 square metres for cargo handling and storage. The port can handle blades up to 90.2 metres long and has harbour mobile cranes, personnel trained to handle over-dimensional cargo and road links to the hinterland.
V O Chidambaranar Port Authority chairperson Susanta Kumar Purohit said India’s clean-energy transition was creating new logistics requirements for ports, as renewable-energy projects increasingly depended on the efficient movement of large, specialised components.

“The sustained growth in wind turbine blade handling demonstrates both market confidence and our operational capability,” Purohit said, adding that the authority aimed to strengthen the port as a logistics gateway for renewable-energy cargo. Download the TOI App.
