Kishan Reddy said dairy farming could provide an additional livelihood to farmers even without large landholdings. Strengthening cooperative societies would enable farmers to collectively undertake milk procurement, processing and marketing, reducing dependence on middlemen, he said. Citing the cooperative dairy model in Gujarat, he said strong farmer-owned institutions could transform village economies. He said dairy cooperatives could create employment for youth and provide women with opportunities to increase their incomes. The facility would add value to farmers’ milk and provide better market opportunities, Sridhar Babu said. He said the project would strengthen the link between farmers, organised milk collection, modern processing and consumers.

The facility would procure milk from farmers in the region and undertake processing and value addition locally. Products would include milk, curd, buttermilk, lassi, paneer, ice cream and ghee, Kishan added. It could also create a complete dairy ecosystem covering transportation, cold chain, packaging, distribution, retail and allied services. Under the cooperative dairy model, a significant share of consumer spending reaches milk producers. Download the TOI App.
