Nagpur: Around 10,000 citizens, fitness enthusiasts, serving personnel, veterans and youth participated in the Sekhon Indian Air Force Marathon 2026 (SIM-26) held in Mumbai on Sunday. The SIM-26 commemorated the supreme sacrifice and valour of Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon, Param Vir Chakra, whose courage and devotion to duty during the defence of Srinagar in 1971 continue to inspire generations. The guest of honour, U-19 cricket captain of India Ayush Mhatre, presented awards to the winners. The successful conduct of SIM-26 in Mumbai reaffirmed the enduring bond between the Indian Air Force and the citizens of Mumbai, while keeping alive the inspiring legacy of Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon and his contribution to the nation.

The event was also aligned with the Fit India Movement launched by the govt of India to promote the importance of fitness. The event was organised by Headquarters Maintenance Command of Indian Air Force in Mumbai and was also conducted simultaneously in seven cities across the country. Despite humid conditions, participants turned up in large numbers for the marathon, which promoted fitness, courage and national pride. The marathon aimed to honour his legacy while promoting the values and ethos of the Indian Air Force and the Defence Forces. Air Marshal Yalla Umesh, VSM, PhD, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Maintenance Command, flagged off the marathon. Sreevalli, President AFFWA (Regional), Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, PVSM, AVSM, NM, FOC-in-C, WNC and other senior officers of the Indian Defence Forces were present. One of the highlights of the event was the participation of senior citizens, including Air Veteran Group Captain Bhabani Shankar Dash (Retired). Download the TOI App.
