Visa renewal fraud
Ahmedabad: A 57-year-old civil contractor has approached Detection of Crime Branch (DCB), alleging that a visa agent from Surat took Rs 23.5 lakh from him for renewing his daughter’s UK student visa but neither completed the process nor returned the money. The contractor’s daughter, 26, had been studying business management in Norwich, UK, on a student visa since Sep 2022, according to a complaint filed on Wednesday. Between Sep 19 and Oct 8, 2025, he sent Rs 23.5 lakh to the agent through an angadia. The complaint states that the agent executed a notarised agreement on April 6, promising to pay Rs 1 lakh each on five dates between May 1 and June 30, Rs 13 lakh by June 30 and the remaining Rs 5.5 lakh later.
As her visa was to expire in Feb this year, she introduced her father to the agent through her roommate’s husband. The contractor told police that he arranged the money from the proceeds of his matured LIC policy, savings and by pledging jewellery. She also shared the agent’s contact number with him. the agent later falsely claimed he could arrange a visa linked to a university in Wembley instead, the complaint states While he had sought renewal of the UK student visa for his daughter’s studies in Norwich. When the contractor’s daughter asked for a refund if he could not assist her, the agent agreed but allegedly delayed repayment. In Jan, the contractor met the agent at his Surat office, where the latter allegedly asked for a week’s time and promised to repay the money after selling his property.
