Ahmedabad: A city sessions court on Wednesday denied bail to 61-year-old Shamsuddin Khedawala, who was arrested on charges of killing his wife and burying her in an 18-foot-deep pit in Vatva 34 years ago. In May, acting on a tip-off, the city crime branch dug up the skeletal remains of Khedawala’s wife, Farzana Radhanpuri, who had gone missing in 1992. Along with Khedawala, his elder brother, Iqbal, was also arrested. Two other accused in the case are dead. Public prosecutor Sudhir Brahmbhatt opposed the bail plea and cited the affidavit of the investigator, underscoring the gravity of the offence. He also contended that the DNA analysis of the skeletal remains established that the person killed and buried was Farzana.

After the hearing, additional sessions judge, J I Patel, said, “Though a chargesheet has been filed in this case, considering the gravity of the offence and as prima facie offence appears to have been made out against the accused, it is not proper to release him on bail. Khedawala has been charged with murder, destruction of evidence and criminal conspiracy. Maintaining his innocence in the bail plea, he submitted that the chargesheet had been filed in the case, and there was no scope for evidence tampering. Download the TOI App.
