Ahmedabad: The city crime branch arrested three men for allegedly selling counterfeit cigarettes worth Rs 1.5 lakh in Vejalpur-Juhapura area, police said on Friday. The accused were identified as Ilyas Modan (46), a Juhapura resident; 32-year-old Asif Saiyed from Bhavnagar; and Javid Deraiya (33), also from Bhavnagar district. Officials also seized cigarette stock worth Rs 1.5 lakh and two mobile phones from the accused. The total value of the seized material was Rs 1.7 lakh.
Police said the trio was allegedly caught near Moti Bakery while attempting to sell the fake cigarettes for financial gain.
The crime branch registered a case under sections 63 and 64 of the Copyright Act, 1957. Police said further investigation was underway to determine the source of the counterfeit cigarettes and identify others involved in their wider distribution. Download the TOI App.
