An order issued by the director of geology and mining said the objectives of the ban “had not been fully achieved” during the period. The decision to extend the ban was taken at a higher level,” a senior official said. The state govt had earlier said local production was inadequate to meet rising domestic demand. Large-scale transportation to neighbouring states, it said, was creating an artificial supply-demand imbalance and driving up the prices of construction materials.
Chennai: Tamil Nadu govt has extended by three months the ban on transporting rough stone and its aggregates used for construction to other states except Puducherry and Karaikal. The restriction was imposed to ensure uninterrupted supply of minerals within Tamil Nadu, protect environment and ecology, and prevent illegal mining and transportation. “Rough stone is not a scarce mineral in the neighbouring states. Transportation of such material creates law and order problems in the border districts of Tamil Nadu. Violations will invite stringent action under existing laws and rules. District collectors and superintendents of police in districts bordering neighbouring states have been directed to remain vigilant and ensure strict compliance. Rough stone deposits are found mainly in Kanyakumari, Tenkasi, Theni, Coimbatore, Tiruppur and Krishnagiri districts, all of which are located in or near the ecologically sensitive Western Ghats. The supply gap has also contributed to illegal quarrying in border districts. Download the TOI App.
