KOLKATA: West Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday warned his predecessor Mamata Banerjee against “digging too deep” into the disclosure of her medical records relating to her 2021 leg injury, saying more documents could be made public if necessary.
Banerjee, then the chief minister and Trinamool Congress candidate from Nandigram, had sustained leg injuries during the 2021 Assembly election campaign.
Speaking to reporters at the state secretariat after a Cabinet meeting, Adhikari said Banerjee was “making a mistake” by raising the issue. She herself had filed FIRs against BJP leaders, and the CID was investigating the matter,” Adhikari said. So, she had left all the documents in her drawer (at her chamber at the Chief Minister’s Office at Nabanna),” Adhikari said. Adhikari also said X-ray and MRI reports related to Banerjee’s injury could be made public if required. “Such a situation will arise that you (Banerjee) will not be able to step out of your house,” the chief minister said.
She subsequently campaigned in a wheelchair with her leg in a cast, with the nature of her injuries becoming a major political issue during the polls. “I will ask the health department to send me the complaint she has made. Perhaps she does not know what she had done. “I will tell her lawyer not to dig too deep into this issue. She had thought she would become chief minister for a fourth term. It also sought an explanation from the hospital authorities on how records related to the treatment of a former chief minister came into the possession of the incumbent chief minister.
