Subal Sil, the coordinator of the CU unit, said, “We had applied for an office area on May 5. Debasis Das, CU registrar, said the university had planned to dismantle the brick partition as it was damaged, but he confirmed that two corners of the room close to the sales counter were initially allotted to two organisations that applied for room allotment for office use.
He said, “A space had been allotted to the Paschimbanga Visvavidyalaya Karmachari Sangha. The portion allotted to us is not sufficient to perform our official work for the organisation. We asked the university to provide us with a larger space for office purposes. The members of the organisation wanted a larger space, but in that case they will have to make a fresh appeal. ”
Kolkata: Controversy has erupted at Calcutta University following the space allotment to two staff organisations for office use. The university authorities have dismantled a portion of a storeroom close to the sales counter on the ground floor of the Asutosh Building to allot space to the two organisations that applied for office space. Among them, the Paschimbanga Visvavidyalaya Karmachari Sangha is affiliated with the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), which will get its office for the first time on the College Street campus. In a recent communication, two staff associations — CU SC, ST, OBC Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff Welfare Association and the Paschimbanga Visvavidyalaya Karmachari Sangha — were allotted the left and right (south-east corner) sides of the partition adjacent to the sales counter. The Karmachari Sangha was informed that they were allotted the space and asked if they were ready to accept it. However, the functionaries of the Visvavidyalaya Karmachari Sangha were not satisfied with the area allotted.
The university dismantled the existing ‘brick partition’ on Wednesday following the space committee’s proposal for a new temporary partition to be made of aluminum and prelam-board replacing the damaged brick partition.
