Kolkata: Two sisters who worked as domestic helps are suspected of stealing jewellery worth around Rs 20 lakh from an upscale housing complex in Behala while the occupants were away on a five-day trip.

Naskar and his wife had left their Buro Shibtala residence on Sept 27 and returned on Oct 1, according to the complaint lodged at Behala police station. Police said the two sisters had started working at the flat about a month ago after being introduced to the family through acquaintances.

The family also said neither had informed them about taking leave. Gold jewellery was also allegedly stolen. They did not initially notice anything amiss as the flat and cupboards appeared undisturbed. The missing jewellery was discovered two days after their return. They allegedly remained absent after the incident, and their phones have since been switched off. Investigators are checking CCTV footage and suspect the duo may have had duplicate keys to the flat and locker. Police are also checking whether the two have any previous criminal records. No arrest has been made yet, and efforts are on to trace them.

The incident came to light on Saturday when the flat owner, Dipanjan Naskar, opened the locker and found several pieces of jewellery, mostly diamond ornaments, missing.
