Because his loan was linked to agricultural land owned by his father, haveri: A farmer’s suicide in Haveri district has highlighted a gap in compensation rules after his family was denied assistance.
Official figures show 182 farmer suicide cases were registered across the state from March 2026 to Sept 30. Of these, 18 were rejected for lack of documents and the remaining 164 are under consideration. So far, 94 have been found eligible, while 71 await a final decision. In 2014, land owned by any family member could be considered. Cultivators of leased land were included in the relief framework in 2015.

“Cases are being decided according to govt norms. For compensation, both land and loan records must be in the deceased’s name,” said Mallikarjun , joint director of agriculture, Haveri. The young farmer died by suicide following financial distress caused by crop loss, despite depending entirely on cultivation for his livelihood. In rural areas, land often remains registered in the names of fathers, grandfathers or other elders, although younger family members manage cultivation, inputs, labour and repayments. Crop loans are commonly sanctioned against land records, while private loans from traders, moneylenders and relatives may have no formal paper trail. Families seeking compensation after a cultivator’s suicide must prove both land ownership and debt in the deceased’s name. Officials say committees are bound by govt norms, while farm households argue that the rules disregard how agriculture functions within joint families. Authorities acknowledge that the absence of loan records in the deceased farmer’s name is a major reason for rejection in several cases. Later, stricter documentation made loan records solely in the deceased’s name crucial. Families want authorities to consider cultivation responsibility, family landholdings, crop activity, institutional and private debt, and village-level evidence before denying relief.
