Dr Koppad said removing sharp or irregularly shaped objects from the digestive tract requires considerable precision as they can cause ulcers, perforation and other serious complications if left untreated. He advised people, particularly parents, to keep sharp objects such as pins, needles, beads, magnets and coins away from children. In cases of accidental ingestion, immediate medical attention should be sought instead of attempting self-treatment or inducing vomiting. He added that BIMS now offers several advanced and affordable treatment procedures, benefiting patients across the region. Download the TOI App.
An X-ray revealed the metal object lodged in his stomach, following which doctors decided to remove it through endoscopy. After developing abdominal discomfort, he approached BIMS for treatment. Dr Ganesh Koppad, consultant gastroenterologist at BIMS, successfully extracted the nail cutter during an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy using a specialised instrument called rat-tooth forceps. The patient recovered well and was discharged after the procedure.
The youth had accidentally swallowed the nail cutter about a week earlier.
