In letter to PM Modi, chief minister Shivakumar seeks special package for Bengaluru infrastructure

CM Shivakumar said rapid population growth and economic activity had put enormous pressure on roads, public transport and civic infrastructure in the city

In a letter dated Wednesday (Nov 4), written in response to Modi’s Karnataka Rajyotsava greetings, Shivakumar said the state was seeking its rightful share of central assistance. He said farmers were seeking sugarcane prices based on the production cost plus 50% formula and restoration of the 9.5% base recovery rate to determine fair and remunerative price.

Seeking a special package for Bengaluru, he said rapid population growth and economic activity had put enormous pressure on roads, public transport and civic infrastructure. “The city that has contributed so much to India’s growth deserves the infrastructure and support it needs to grow further,” he said. Describing Mekedatu as crucial for drinking water needs in southern Karnataka, he said it could progress through cooperation with Tamil Nadu while ensuring the neighbouring state’s rightful share of water.

Bengaluru: Chief minister DK Shivakumar has sought a special financial package for development of infrastructure in Bengaluru, expedited drought relief and central intervention to resolve the sugarcane pricing dispute, placing a series of demands before Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of his proposed visit to Karnataka . “We are not asking for special privileges. We are seeking fair treatment and support that our state deserves,” he wrote. He also sought expedited clearances and financial assistance for Mekedatu, Kalasa-Banduri, Upper Bhadra, Upper Krishna and Yettinahole irrigation projects.

Flagging the drought situation, he urged the Centre to expedite assistance sought in the state’s memorandum to provide relief to affected farmers. He also reiterated his request for an appointment with PM for an all-party delegation to discuss drought relief and sugarcane farmers’ demands.
