The agitators demanded a Rs 1,000 crore special package, compensation of Rs 50,000 per acre, loan relief, drought-relief works, cattle shelters, fodder supply and release of Karnataka’s share of Bhima river water from Maharashtra ’s Ujani reservoir. Kalaburagi : Farmers under the banner of Samyukta Horata Karnataka staged a road blockade outside the Kalaburagi deputy commissioner’s office on Friday, demanding that the govt declare the district drought-hit due to deficient rainfall and widespread crop losses. Tur cultivated after scanty rainfall in August is also wilting due to rising temperatures.

Farmer leaders said green gram, black gram, soybean and sesame crops suffered extensive damage during the kharif season. In many areas, crops failed despite farmers taking up a second round of sowing. They claimed streams, canals and ravines have dried up, while groundwater levels have fallen sharply, creating shortages of drinking water and fodder. Tension prevailed during the protest when a farmer allegedly attempted self-immolation by dousing himself with petrol.
