Demand met
NWKRTC was formed in 1997, following the division of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC). Now, 29 years later, the state cabinet approved the name change during its meeting on Oct 29. The decision to rename the transport corporation was taken during a meeting of its board of directors on Feb 17, chaired by the corporation’s chairman and MLA Raju Kage, and a proposal to this effect was placed before the govt. Ashoka Chandragi, the president of Zilla Kannada Sanghatanegala Kriya Samiti, said on Sept 17, 2019, the region formerly known as ‘Hyderabad-Karnataka’ was renamed ‘Kalyana Karnataka’, and the road transport corporation serving that region was subsequently renamed accordingly. In 2021, after becoming chief minister, Basavaraj Bommai took steps to rename ‘Mumbai Karnataka’ to ‘Kittur Karnataka’, but the name of the North-Western Road Transport Corporation was not changed.
Chief minister DK Shivakumar , who participated in this year’s Kittur Utsava, had announced the govt’s decision to rename the transport corporation.
Chandaragi further said Kittur MLA Babasaheb Patil also joined in the demand to name the transport corporation. He further said that he had requested to organise the renaming ceremony in Belagavi before the end of this month.
