Nashik: Two ashramshala girl students, aged 13 and eight, died in separate incidents in Nashik district on Thursday and Friday, with authorities investigating the deaths.
The 13-year-old Std VIII student was found hanging at her home in Trimbak taluka on Thursday evening after returning from her day boarding school. Police said the girl had written two unit test papers before leaving for home and allegedly hanged herself around 5.30pm. Tribal community members have been protesting in Nashik for 18 days, alleging that students receive substandard food from the central kitchen and are not cared for when ill at school but sent home for treatment.

In the second incident, the eight-year-old Std II student at Isapur Govt Ashramshala in Kalwan fell ill on Wednesday and was declared brought dead at Kalwan sub-district hospital around 2am on Friday. Integrated tribal development project officer Kashmira Sankhe said the girl had a mild fever on Wednesday and was treated at school. “Her fever returned on Thursday, after which she was referred to a nearby primary health centre and given medication.
About the reports that the incident may have happened owing to the food quality of the central kitchen, I would like to inform that the ashramshala is linked to the Chankapur central kitchen, which has altogether 17 ashramshalas attached to it.
Sankhe said, “We are investigating the case. The post mortem is being done by forensic experts at the Nashik civil hospital. We have checked the food and water quality provided to the ashramshala students and have found no problem in it. Thus what led to the girl’s death will be clear only after the post mortem report arrives,”
