The market is set to undergo a ₹235-crore redevelopment. As per sources, the ambitious redevelopment project envisages a multi-storey commercial complex on around 8,000 sqm of land near Cotton Market Metro station. The plan includes rehabilitation of existing traders, with 28 shops proposed on the lower ground floor over around 1,520 sqm. The rehabilitation component alone is estimated at ₹6.57 crore.
Traders, on the other hand, are worried about dirty water splashing onto vegetable stalls due to movement of vehicles and people. Regular visitors said it is difficult to use the already uneven pathways during monsoon. Dinesh Seth, a local resident, said that navigating the market after rain has become difficult, particularly for elderly people and those carrying bags of vegetables. Another resident, Prakash Kumar , said shoppers often end up with mud-caked footwear and stained clothes while moving through the premises. A vegetable vendor, requesting anonymity, said the slush also affects business. Our produce is damaged and customers hesitate to buy it,” the vendor said. A senior NMC official told TOI that as an immediate measure, gravel could be spread over badly affected portions to make the pathways walkable. “It is a stopgap arrangement and may have to be repeated until the market is redeveloped,” the official said.
