Ashi Nagar Mosquito Breeding Hotspot, Satranjipura Sees Drop: The wider industry impact

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Nagpur: Ashi Nagar emerged as Nagpur’s biggest mosquito breeding hotspot in Sept, even as the overall mosquito density across the city declined, according to NMC Malaria and Filaria Department’s insect collector reports for Aug and Sept.

The House Index (HI), which measures the proportion of houses found with mosquito breeding, fell from 5.73% in Aug to 5.12% in Sept. The department inspected 8,680 houses in Sept, against 8,761 in Aug. The number of houses found positive for mosquito breeding fell from 502 to 444, a decline of nearly 12%. Similarly, positive breeding containers declined marginally from 509 to 445. However, the Container Index increased from 1.54% to 1.65%, suggesting that breeding remained concentrated in a smaller number of inspected containers. Ashi Nagar recorded the highest HI at 6.46% in Sept, up from 5.56% in Aug. This was followed by Satranjipura at 6.29%, though the latter recorded a dramatic improvement from its Aug HI of 15.69%. Nehru Nagar was third at 5.79%, down from 6.31% in Aug. HI in Dhantoli declined from 6.27% to 5.43%, Lakadganj from 6.05% to 4.85%, Laxmi Nagar from 5.89% to 4.71% and Gandhibagh from 4.86% to 4.63%. Dharampeth also recorded a decline from 4.53% to 4.10%. Mangalwari recorded the lowest HI in Sept at 4%, down from 6.5% in Aug.

Other zones also showed improvement. The sharpest fall was recorded in Satranjipura, where HI dropped by more than nine percentage points.

The data indicate that mosquito breeding has declined across most NMC zones, but the rise in Ashi Nagar warrants closer surveillance. With the monsoon retreating, civic health officials will need to focus on eliminating stagnant-water breeding sites in high-index pockets rather than relying only on fogging and anti-larval measures.
