BMC Approves Tree Removal for BARC Connectivity Project
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) Tree Authority has sanctioned the removal of 251 trees and the transplantation of 48 trees. This decision supports the Department of Atomic Energy’s project aimed at improving connectivity between the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) Old Mandala and New Mandala Road. The approval was granted on Tuesday, marking a significant step forward for the infrastructure initiative.
In lieu of the proposed cutting of 251 trees and replanting of 48 trees, 2,211 new trees will be planted within 15 days from the date of felling, according to the proposal. The Tree Authority has also issued a public notice regarding a proposal to cut 12 trees for the development of a data centre for Amazon in Powai. An advertisement regarding the proposal was published in newspapers inviting suggestions and objections, but none were received. The height of the newly planted trees will not be less than 6ft, and they will be of local species. An undertaking has been submitted stating that the replanted trees will also be planted on the same land.
