FDA said it could not immediately establish when the video showing the rat was recorded. FDA collected samples of gulab jamun and other food items for laboratory analysis. The FDA team also found that the shop did not have the mandatory Food Business Registration Certificate. The shopkeeper, however, claimed that there had been a dispute between him and one of his employees over payment of wages. He alleged that he suspected the employee may have deliberately placed the rat in the gulab jamun and recorded the video before circulating it on social media.

The footage sparked concerns over food hygiene and safety, following which local residents gathered outside the Harish Gulab Jamun shop on Wednesday evening and demanded action against the shopkeeper.
