Sources said consignments were also transported on mail and express trains, loaded at Vasai or Borivali railway stations and later moved by taxis or other vehicles. The personnel were identified as Anil Gujar, posted at Borivli GRP station, and Tushar Thakur, posted at Vasai GRP station. The action followed a citizen’s complaint to senior GRP officers alleging that the constables were in contact with gutka suppliers and helped transport consignments. A departmental inquiry allegedly found their involvement, following which Mumbai Railway Police Commissioner Rakesh Kalasagar ordered their suspension. Sources alleged that gutka suppliers paid storage contractors to facilitate the transportation. Certain Railway Protection Force personnel and members of other security agencies were also allegedly paid to allow consignments to be transported regularly. A video reportedly showed bags containing gutka kept in a storage compartment of an air-conditioned coach. Several long-distance trains arriving at Bandra Terminus were allegedly used for the operation. Gutka packets were concealed in black bags and hidden in bedroll storage areas, allegedly with the connivance of some contractor personnel and others. The trains allegedly used included Suryanagari Express, Golden Temple Mail, Garib Rath Express, Awadh Express, Bhavnagar Express and Haridwar Express. Download the TOI App.
