Fire caused damage to the NICU
The incident caused panic among relatives, and several rushed to the hospital. Police personnel also reached the spot and cordoned off the area.
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar : Nine infants and over 50 patients were evacuated after a fire broke out at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Asian Hospital on Jalna Road around 2.30am on Friday, triggering panic.
All newborns from NICU and other patients were safely evacuated,” director of Asian Hospital Dr Shoeb Hashmi said. Laxman Kolhe, in-charge of the fire brigade, CIDCO, said thick smoke engulfed the NICU and parts of the hospital building. Fire fighting was difficult as heavy smoke was emanating but the blaze was brought under control within less than half an hour,” he said.
No patient or hospital employee was injured. “The fire broke out in the AC system of the NICU. “Five fire tenders went to the spot. The hospital staff had evacuated the patients by the time we reached. The exact cause of the fire was not immediately known though a short circuit is suspected to have been the trigger.
