“The crop requires timely sowing between June 15 and July 15 and good early-season soil moisture, followed by regular spells of rain. Authorities said the issue of upto 40% chances of yield reductions under delayed monsoon further compounded due to absence of rains in crucial stages of growth of soybean crops, leading to massive crash in yields.
A senior official from the agriculture department, said soybean is most vulnerable to vagaries of monsoon even if it is a popular crop. The delayed arrival of monsoon this year together with extended dry spells in Aug and Sept took a toll on the crop from rain-fed cultivation,” he said. Anwar Shaikh, a soybean farmer from Mukhed taluka of Nanded district , said he has already sold his pair of bulls owned by him to pay his debts by the end of September.

During his visit, Agrawal stressed field verification alongside technical data to determine drought severity. Central drought assessment team chief and Union agriculture ministry joint secretary Muktanand Agrawal on Saturday directed Beed district administrations to complete pending crop-cutting experiments on time and accurately record losses, enabling drought-affected farmers to receive crop-damage compensation before Diwali.
