Tested and assessed: Two years after saying Malabar Hill reservoir can be repaired, BMC turns

Mumbai: Almost two years after an IIT-Roorkee team inspected Malabar Hill reservoir and concluded that the existing structure could be repaired rather than demolished and reconstructed, BMC now plans to appoint the institute to review its plans for a new alternative reservoir at the adjoining site.

IIT-Roorkee Proposes New Reservoir Design Amid Repairs

The IIT-Roorkee team has confirmed that the existing reservoir can be repaired without the need for demolition. However, they noted that repairs cannot proceed while water supply operations are active. To address this, the civic body collaborated with IIT-Roorkee to explore alternative designs.

The proposed solution is a three-tier reservoir with a storage capacity of 52 million litres, to be constructed on the western side of the current reservoir. This site is currently occupied by staff quarters and a pumping station. Additionally, the plan includes the construction of a new valve gallery to enhance operational efficiency.

This approach aims to minimize the impact on local trees while ensuring that water supply needs are met during the transition period.
