Demand for marigold flowers have increased ahead of Dasara
Nashik : Marigold prices nearly doubled in the wholesale market over the past 24 hours as demand surged ahead of Dasara , with prices rising from Rs 100-125 per crate on Sunday to Rs 200-225 on Monday, a day before the festival. “The yield has dropped by nearly 40-50% this year. Because of inadequate rainfall and concerns over water availability, farmers said many growers reduced the area under cultivation this season. He added that prices could rise further on Tuesday due to the limited availability of flowers in the market.

“Wholesale marigold prices were around Rs 100 per crate on Sunday, but increased to Rs 200-225 per crate on Monday as demand picked up ahead of Dasara,” said Ajay Malode, a marigold grower from Sinnar taluka. Despite the increase, growers said prices remained below the levels recorded during the corresponding festive period last year. Sunil Pendhari, a marigold farmer from Chandwad taluka, said inadequate rainfall and a prolonged dry spell had adversely affected the crop. Even though prices have increased ahead of Dasara, the rates are still lower than what farmers received during the festival season last year,” he said.
Each crate contains around 4kg of flowers. Marigold flowers are in high demand during Dasara, one of the most auspicious days in the Hindu calendar, when people traditionally buy vehicles, gold and other valuables. The flowers are widely used to decorate new vehicles and homes, make garlands and perform religious rituals. Traders and farmers attributed the sharp rise in prices to a sudden spike in demand and lower production this season. The festive period is a key earning window for farmers who cultivate marigold specifically for the Dasara and Diwali markets. However, drought conditions and an extended dry spell in several parts of Maharashtra have affected production this year. In Nashik district, marigold cultivation is concentrated in Chandwad, Sinnar, Dindori and Nashik talukas. Download the TOI App.
