Seized stock of suspicious sweets
The FDA last week seized 1,121kg of suspicious khoya-based sweets transported from Gujarat to the city. From a private tourist bus, the officials recovered 2,079 kilograms of products collectively valued at Rs3.6 lakh and allegedly intended for wholesale distribution in the city. A concurrent check of another private bus at the same location led to the seizure of an additional 1,612 kilograms of assorted sweets worth Rs 2.5 lakh. This first phase alone accounted for 3,691 kilograms valued at Rs5.9 lakh. In the second separate operation conducted the same evening, the team examined another consignment brought by a private bus from Ahmedabad and confiscated 1,074 kilograms of suspect sweets worth Rs1.7 lakh. The seized stock comprised six varieties of sweets, with the condensed milk analogue constituting the largest share at 514 kilograms.

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar : The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) intensified its “Safe Food Safe Maharashtra” campaign with two separate enforcement operations on Sunday evening, seizing a combined 4,765 kilograms of suspected substandard sweets and Khoya-analog products valued at around Rs7.6 lakh from inter-state tourist buses near Shahnoormiya Dargah Chowk here. Food safety officer Varsha Rode said statutory samples from each variety in both operations have been drawn and dispatched to the designated food testing laboratory for detailed analysis, while the remaining bulk quantities have been sealed and stored at a cold storage facility to preserve their condition pending results. FDA joint commissioner Shrikaant Karkale said public health remains non-negotiable during the festive period. “Once laboratory reports establish violations, stringent prosecution will be initiated under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006,” he said, adding that surprise inspections and intelligence-based actions will continue unabated in the coming days.
Acting on confidential information from Mumbai Intelligence Bureau about large-scale movement of questionable dairy-based confectionery from Gujarat to Marathwada during festival season, a special FDA team mounted surveillance in the travel parking area. In the first operation, the team intercepted two buses arriving from Ahmedabad. The FDA has appealed to the traders to source sweets only from licensed manufacturers with proper billing, while urging consumers to remain vigilant about quality and labelling. Download the TOI App.
