Madurai Corporation is holding a drive from Friday to Sunday with the aim of properly collecting electronic waste and taking it to an approved recycling system.
Madurai : The Madurai City Municipal Corporation has collected nearly four tonnes of electronic waste in the first two days of its three-day special e-waste collection drive, with officials expecting the total to reach 5-7 tonnes by the end of Sunday. Around 1.25 tonnes of e-waste were collected on Friday and another 2.85 tonnes on Saturday as awareness about the drive spread, according to a senior corporation official. The drive, being held from Sept 4 to 6, was launched by corporation commissioner Gaurav Kumar , who urged residents to dispose of hazardous electronic waste safely and responsibly. Special e-waste collection boxes were placed at the Corporation Head Office, five zonal offices and 40 tax collection centres. The corporation has also partnered with Young Indians (YI) – Madurai Chapter to extend the drive to the ongoing ‘Maa Madurai Vizha 2.0’ at Tamukkam Grounds.

Gaurav Kumar said dumping e-waste along with regular municipal garbage could cause severe soil and water contamination, posing long-term risks to human health and local ecosystems. “By routing the collected waste to authorised recycling facilities, the corporation aims to prevent toxins from reaching landfills while ensuring safe resource recovery,” he said. A senior corporation official said similar larger-scale drives would soon be conducted to collect e-waste directly from households.
Officials expect the final collection to increase once waste from the remaining collection bins is tallied. Residents were encouraged to hand over unused mobile phones, chargers, cables and other small household electronic items. Dedicated e-waste collection baskets have been placed at the venue for visitors to hand over their old electronic devices. Download the TOI App.
