Parking charges for private vehicles have also been reduced, with new time slabs replacing the previous costlier structure.
Under the old system, private cars entering the airport for pick-up or drop-off had 12 minutes to complete the trip and exit. Taxis entering the airport to pick up passengers earlier paid Rs 135 per entry, while the new tender fixes the lane pick-up charge at Rs 80.
Vehicles exceeding this period attracted “excess charges” linked to parking rates. “The fixed-time deadline often caused confusion between passengers and staff at the toll booth, making a simple airport transit uneasy,” aviation activist Mahendra Varman said. Madurai: Picking up and dropping passengers at Madurai international airport is set to become cheaper under a new parking tender that removes lane fees for private cars. Parking charges for private vehicles have also been reduced, with new time slabs replacing the previous costlier structure. The new tender removes this timed exit charge, making private pick-ups and drop-offs from terminal lanes free. Cars, however, cannot wait at the kerbside for more than five minutes and must use the parking area for longer waits. “Now that it has been removed, we hope transit will be hassle-free. This additional amount was generally passed on to passengers, increasing the cost of an airport taxi ride.

Private cars will pay Rs 40 for the first 30 minutes, Rs 60 for 30-60 minutes and Rs 80 for stays up to 120 minutes. Previously, these cars were charged Rs 50 for the first half-hour and Rs 120 for stays between 30 and 120 minutes. After two hours, the new tariff adds Rs 10 per hour for private and commercial cars until 24 hours.
However, app-based cabs and taxi operators holding agreements or licences with Airport Authority of India are exempt from the lane pick-up charge. At Madurai, these services include Rapido, Red Taxi and WTi, which can use designated pick-up and drop lanes without the additional fee. If these vehicles enter the designated parking area, users will pay only the applicable parking charge.
