Madurai : Madras high court on Wednesday summoned the Madurai city commissioner of police on a plea which sought to ensure police discipline, citing a recent incident where a special sub-inspector of police (SSI) was found smoking in uniform at the police checkpost in the vicinity of Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple in Madurai.
A division bench of Justice P Velmurugan and Justice K K Ramakrishnan passed the order while hearing a public interest litigation filed by A Radhakrishnan of Salem. Radhakrishnan stated that the action appears to be confined to an internal warning and temporary duty assignment, without adequately demonstrating consideration of the applicable statutory provisions, the relevant service rules and the wider issues raised in his complaint. Challenging the closure of his complaint, the petitioner moved court seeking a direction to take appropriate preventive measures across the state to ensure police discipline and effective enforcement of the relevant statutory proceedings.
