N Purushothama Mallya
The mortal remains of Mallya, 97, were cremated at Rudra Vilasam crematorium in Karippalam in Fort Kochi on Saturday morning. Born in Mattancherry on May 7, 1929, Mallya was among the leading voices of Konkani literature and scholarship in Kerala . He played a key role in establishing the Konkani Bhasha Prachar Sabha in Mattancherry in 1966, the first such centre for the promotion of Konkani outside Goa.
A crusader for official recognition of Konkani language, Mallya won numerous honours at the state and national level. He was the state president of Gowda Saraswat Brahmins Maha Sabha. He served as president of the 12th All India Konkani Sahitya Parishad Sammelan. He was an adviser to several social organisations. He was the son of late Narayana Mallya and late N M Saraswathi Bai, a teacher, in Kochi. Besides authoring a lot of books, he also researched the role of Konkani scholars in Kerala’s socio-cultural spheres. Kochi : N Purushothama Mallya, a Padma Shri awardee, educationist and writer who worked to promote Konkani language in Kochi, died at his residence in Cherlai on Friday.
