The event featured around 350 dogs representing 50 breeds, including several rarely seen in Madurai. A competition for young handlers aged 12 to 16 was a key attraction, with children demonstrating their ability to control and present dogs of different sizes before judges. Among the participants was M Chandra, 14, who said growing up with dogs had encouraged him to take part.

“I also want to encourage other children my age to adopt and care for dogs,” he said. Eight youngsters received prizes based on their handling skills and their dogs’ behaviour. A Belgian Malinois, a breed commonly used for police and military duties, drew attention with a demonstration by a trainer from a private K9 centre. The session showcased how dogs could be trained for security assignments, including guarding warehouses and detecting suspicious materials.
