The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

The court was hearing a plea challenging the state govt’s decision to lift the registration ban on more than 3,000 acres of temple inam land parcels linked to the four temples. Madurai: Madras high court on Wednesday directed the registration department not to register land parcels belonging to four temples in Karur district.

In his petition, Radhakrishnan stated that authorities have directed the registration department to ‘unblock’ (de-freeze) the prohibitory module for land parcels measuring 3084.95 acres linked to Balasubramaniya Swamy Temple, Kalyana Pasupatheeswarar Swamy Temple, Ravishwarar Swamy Temple and Vikrutheswarar Swamy Temple across 15 villages in Karur district. He stated that these land parcels were previously blocked (in 2008 and 2015) to prevent unlawful alienation. By unblocking them, authorities have facilitated the registration of temple land without prior sanction of the commissioner of the Hindu religious and charitable endowment (HR and CE) department and the government, as mandated under sections 34 and 41 of the HR and CE Act, 1959.
