TVK minister Arun Raj has rejected Communist leaders’ charge that officials were dictating terms to chief minister C Joseph Vijay and his government, saying it was the previous DMK regime that had functioned under bureaucratic control.
Udhayanidhi had told the assembly that more than 550 grave crimes, including murders, custodial deaths and sexual offences, were recorded during the government’s first 116 days.
CPI state secretary M Veerapandian had said that the directive was issued without their knowledge and said officials should take instructions from the elected government, not the other way around. “To say, based on one incident, that the government is under the control of officials is very amusing,” Arun told reporters on Sunday. He said departmental action had been initiated over the circular and added that officials saw it as an opportunity to work under an “honest and transparent leadership”. “The chief minister will certainly give an appropriate response,” Raj said, adding that Udhayanidhi’s speech did not reflect what people were experiencing.
