The Cyber Cell of Kolkata Police has initiated an investigation into a major cyber fraud scheme involving the creation and distribution of unauthorized ‘ghost SIM cards.’ This fraudulent operation has resulted in significant financial losses for residents, amounting to over Rs 1.1 crore within just two months. Authorities are working to uncover the extent of the network and identify those responsible for this illegal activity.
On and before Aug 21, several point of sale (PoS) telecom vendors, distributors, and store employees allegedly entered into a criminal conspiracy, fraudulently accessing and using confidential customer data, documents, and biometric information gathered during routine transactions, according to cops. These SIMs were then supplied to cybercrime racketeers, enabling them to execute fraudulent financial transactions amounting to Rs 83.1 lakh and Rs 26.3 lakh across two operational modules.
