The Alipore district court in Kolkata has granted bail to Susanta Ghosh, the councillor representing Ward 108 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). This decision comes in the wake of a financial fraud case associated with an alleged land scam. The court’s ruling was made on Tuesday, allowing Ghosh to be released while the case proceeds.
Ghosh, who had been in judicial custody for nearly 54 days, was accused of illegally selling govt land belonging to the urban development department.
Defence advocate Subrata Sardar said Ghosh had already secured bail in all other cases pending against him in different jurisdictions. With bail granted in the final case, Ghosh is set to walk out of jail. During the hearing, Sardar argued that Ghosh had been falsely implicated and that the probe had found no concrete evidence of financial transactions linking him to the alleged fraud. The defence also pointed out that several co-accused had been granted bail. The public prosecutor opposed the plea, alleging that Ghosh was the mastermind behind the land scam and could influence the ongoing investigation. After examining the case diary and other records, the district judge granted bail.
