England captain Joe Root has admitted he is “really hacked off” and “really disappointed” after another off-field incident involving an England player brought the team’s drinking culture under scrutiny again. “Ultimately you’re grown adults,” Root had said after the curfew was removed. “It’s not the isolated incident itself,” Root added. Carse has yet to publicly comment on the incident, but Root said the fast bowler was deeply remorseful. “I don’t think it has been a very good look, the recent past, if I’m being brutally honest,” Root said. “At all.”
Root’s comments came after fast bowler Brydon Carse was pictured outside a nightclub in the early hours of Sunday in handcuffs and surrounded by police officers. The incident has prompted an investigation by England’s Cricket Regulator and reignited questions over the team’s conduct away from the field. The latest episode is particularly awkward for Root, who had only recently spoken about the responsibilities that come with representing England after the team leadership scrapped a midnight curfew imposed following a string of controversial late-night incidents. “You know what it takes to play for England, you know what your responsibilities are off the field, and we need to make sure we don’t find ourselves with any little situations off the field. “If I’m being brutally honest, I’m really hacked off. “It’s the fact we continually keep making stupid mistakes away from the game and it’s detracting from what we’re doing on the field.
I’m really disappointed,” Root said at a news conference on Tuesday.
